Yesterday the recipients of the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom were honored at the White House. Among them were several celebrities: movie stars Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, and Tom Hanks, music icons Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen, and N.B.A. legends Kareem Abdul-Jabar and Michael Jordan. It must have been Obama’s happiest time as President since Donald Trump was elected to succeed him. A basketball enthusiast, Obama looked particularly good humored while standing next to the towering Abdul-Jabar and Jordan.

As bankers celebrate the dawn of the Trump era and white spremacists “hail” the president elect, just to name a couple of the many ominous signs following the elections, it’s high time for progressives to stand tall.

So far, the most visible has been Bernie Sanders, who’s once again traveling the country, this time to promote his new book, Our Revolution, while being regularly on TV shows including Charlie RoseStephen Colbert, Tavis Smiley, and even The View. Perhaps most notably, he has joined the movement that is corageously resisting the bulding of the Dakota Access Pipeline. He spoke at a rally in front of the White House and is actively supporting the movement as the next step in an ongoing mobilization “to reclaim democracy for the working people” of America.

As for the resistants facing the police in freezing North Dakota, they are probably those standing taller than anyone else right now in the U.S. of A.
