Last night, a Detroit Police officer accidentally shot and killed a 7 year-old girl during a search warrant at a home in one of the city’s predominantly black neighborhoods. Significantly, the home is located just close to the border of the wealthy, predominantly white neighborhood of Grosse Point, that is, at the edge of one the widest income gaps between any residential areas in the United States. Aiyana Jones – that’s the name of the girl – lived in a place that is the closest thing to a Third World country in what was once the industrial heartland of the West, where cowboys apparently display the same kind of sensitivity for which they have become infamous in Baghdad.
